Supporting local nature guides with Emberiza Fund

During our first visit to Uganda in 2004, we were particularly impressed by the number and quality of local birding guides, usually young people with great knowledge of the birds and wildlife of their areas and an extraordinary ability to find and show them. They were the best we had seen so far anywhere in Africa .

The Uganda Birdguides Club trains aspiring professional guides, and provides them with official recognition and a much better chance to find a job, either at a Government-operated reserve or with a private company. The Club is integrated within the larger USAGA (Uganda Safari Guides Association).

Together with some friends, we have created the Emberiza Fund to provide the UBGC's trainees with the most difficult items for them to get: field guide books and binoculars, both basic for their job: a donation has been made to each of the Club's twenty-two trainees of 2007, consisting of a pair of Minolta Classic 8x40 binoculars and a copy of the Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa and the Kingdon Pocket Guide to African Mammals , both published by A&C Black and in our opinion the best books in their category. This trip's main objective was to deliver these items to the Club. Trainees from all over the country gathered at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest 's Visitor's Centre in Buhoma, where they received the items from the Park's Deputy Chief Warden.

The 2007 UBGC trainees with Ignacio Yúfera & The USAGA-Uganda Birdguides Team

Our intention is to continue working together with the UBGC on an annual basis, on this and other related projects. This tour is part of the work to help local nature guides and its economy.

In 2009 with Mr. James Bahinguza, General Manager of the Uganda Tourism Board, in Kampala & The UBGC/USAGA staff with Ignacio Yúfera

From the beginning the project had the support of the Uganda Tourism Board (www.visituganda.com) and its Director, Mr. James Bahinguza. It is both the Emberiza Fund's and the UBGC's intention to continue working together in this project on an annual basis.

INTRODUCTION

Uganda is debatably Africa 's most thrilling destination for birders and naturalists, it is a country blessed with an astonishing diversity of birdlife. Despite its relatively modest size (roughly like Great Britain ), no other area in Africa can match its amazing diversity of habitats ranging from arid semi-deserts, rich savannahs, lowlands and mountain rainforests to vast wetlands, volcanoes and an afro-alpine zone, and covering an altitude from 650 to 5000 meters. Uganda is an equatorial country of astonishing contrasts. This richness is reflected in the number of birds per square kilometre the highest than any other country in Africa ! Given the small size of the country, which is approximately 235,000 square kilometres, Uganda boasts a national bird list of over 1008 species. Ongoing political stability and good infrastructure and tourist services make the country one of the best destinations in Africa offering an extraordinary natural history experience.
